A typical human port in the Enchanted Biome, with all three boat types.

Boats are watercraft that the four races use for a variety of purposes after building a dock. There are three types of boats. Each of these types have their own unique use, and each race has their own versions for two of these three core types. While boats are usually the main form of transportation between separate landmasses, any unit can still swim to their destination, this only happens if a unit was forced into the water. Even though they are inanimate vehicles, boats are considered as creatures as can be 'killed' (their "death" is a small explosion that doesn't cause any damage) and they have a unit menu.

Boats can be favorited, and their names can be changed. They can be blessed. They are instantly killed if they are inflicted with madness, and can be damaged by aggressive aquatic creatures (piranhas). Boats will be destroyed (sink) if there kingdom is destroyed and they have no home kingdom dock to return to for too long.

How They Are Built[edit]

Boats are spawned from docks. They can be researched by any culture and built on any village with access to a coast. Tier 2 docks can support 3 boats (1 for each type) while tier 1 docks (fishing docks) can only spawn fishing boats (1 fishing boat per dock). Boats currently cannot be pillaged or looted in anyway but they can be shot at by enemy troops. They also can't be taken by an enemy kingdom by boarding it, and are instead captured along with the village they are a part of. Due to their differences, boat tech progression varies for different races with humans usually getting them the fastest. Each boat will count toward village population. Boats will return to docks if they have less than 80% of their max health to be repaired.

Boat Types[edit]

There are three types of boats that civilizations can build, each fulfilling a different purpose.

Fishing Boat[edit]

The fishing boat is usually the first boat to be built and is a small boat that is universal among the races. The fishing boat will casually sail close to their original kingdom and throw a net over to the side to catch fish. After that, it will sail back to its home port and deposit the fish, then go back out to sea. Unlike the other two types, these boats don't appear as boats on the mini map when selecting the "Boat" option. This type of boat has 100 health. They cost 5 wood and 5 gold to build.

Trading Boat[edit]

The trading boat will sail between kingdom ports simulating "trade". What they actually do is generate five gold each time they make a stop. They will only sail to villages with ports that their kingdom is not actively at war with. Each race has its own version of this boat. This type of boat has 1000 health. They cost 10 wood and 10 gold to build.

Trading in Worldbox is currently under developed and is planned to be improved in the future.

Battleship/Transport Boat[edit]

Despite transports being the biggest ships they can actually be unlocked before trading boats. This type of boat will usually stay stationed near their village's dock waiting for passengers. Once ready, the ship will leave port, then stop next to the shore where it will pick up units from its respective kingdom. These ships will then travel to their destination and drop off the passengers. Each race also has its own version of this boat. This type of boat has 1500 health points and can hold up to 100 units. They cost 5 wood, 20 gold, and 2 common metal to build.

Use Cases:

  • When a war begins, they will be used for transporting military units with the purpose of invading or retreating to/from other kingdoms
  • Commonly used by settlers to move from one island/continent to another if there is no land-based travel available
  • If there is a new king that is not living at the capital, transports will be used to move the new king to the capital if needed
  • Rescue people if they are stranded on places that do not allow them to return home by foot

Boat Job Logic[edit]

Fishing Boats[edit]

Fishing boats randomly head into waters to catch fish. Each time, they have a:

  • 50% chance to randomly go to a neighbouring water chunk
  • 50% chance to remain in the original chunk

Each time they fish, they obtain 1 unit of fish, which is deposited into the fishing boat's inventory. The fishing boat will continue to fish if it has less or equal to 10 fish in it's inventory, otherwise it will return to the docks and deposit all its collected fish into the village inventory.

Transport Boats[edit]

When there are units which need to be transported to a different island (e.g. soldiers ready to go to war, settlers ready to colonize new land), a "taxi request" is sent with a status of "Pending". Idle transport boats will automatically take up requests from their kingdom. When a request is picked up, its status changes to "Assigned". The transport boat will then head over to pick up passengers.

The transport boat will (theoretically) depart when any of the following conditions are satisfied:

  • All persons related to the taxi request have boarded
  • The number of passengers on a boat reaches 100
  • The transport boat has waited for more than 12 months

Repairs[edit]

When boats are attacked, if their health is less than 25% max health, they will stop their current job and return to their home docks for repairs. When boats are idle, if their health is less than 80% max health, they will return to their docks for repair.

When parked in the docks, boats undergo repairs i.e. restore their health. Each "repair" restores at most 100 health points; the amount of time required for each repair is (amount of health restored) / 125 (months)

Self-Destruction[edit]

When a boat's home docks is destroyed, the boat temporarily becomes a "ghost ship" (they are visually the same as normal boats). "Ghost ships" will actively search in the current waters for docks belonging to their original kingdom.

If they manage to find such a dock within 2 months, they will recognize it as their new home dock. Otherwise, they will self-destruct by dealing themselves 1011 damage.

Trivia[edit]

  • Boats have 100% knockback reduction.
  • Boats actually traits. They all have a special "It's a boat" trait and trading and transport ships have the Light Lamp trait also. Despite this you cannot use trait editor on them.
  • Boats cannot be seen when zoomed out unless "Boats" option is selected in the Civilizations tab.
  • Boats can get the Blessed trait if you use the Blessing power on them and also the Powerup and Caffeinated (makes boats much faster) status.
  • Boats currently do not directly engage in any kind of combat but many hope for it to become a feature eventually.
  • There is an unused ghost ship texture in the game's files.

Version Trivia[edit]

  • Boats could be infected or poisoned until version 0.21.0.
  • Fishing boats used to have 500 health until version 0.14.0.
  • Funeral Boats: "if a unit died from age/hunger inside a boat, his body stayed forever inside that boat. Eventually the boat had 1000 of bodies and counting" - version 0.14.0 changelogs fix.
  • There used to be a fishing boats knowledge until it was removed in version 0.12.02 (they are now unlocked after a culture gets the docks knowledge).
  • Boats could receive the wise, cursed, plague, and immortal traits until fixed in version 0.8.0.
  • Boats were added in version 0.6.187.
  • There is a boat language found in the game's settings, it was added in version 0.5.161.
  • Boats first appeared in Worldbox in the loading screen in version 0.5.155.
  • Loading Screen Boat (sheep on a raft)

  • Old Fishing Boat Tech
