Clans will be greatly improved in the next update. They will be much more influential, important and interesting! They will be getting their own trait editor, similar to the one that are coming to cultures.
What are Clans Right Now?[edit]
Currently clans function as groups of nobility and influence who becomes kings and village leaders. Only some units are part of a clan and clans only grow through king's and village leader's direct offspring. Clans are a way for the player to predict how power transfers from one unit to another. Think of them as royal families. Units inside a kingdom will start their own clan if one is needed to fill powerful roles. The purpose of clans is currently not well understood, and most players rarely pay attention to them. See the Clans page for more info.
What Will Clans be like in the Update?[edit]
Clans will be much more influential and complex in the upcoming update having direct connections to File:ReligionList10x.pngreligion (a new meta object). They we'll be a redesigned ui for clans along with multiple new submenus. Clans will have traits that define how they function along with how they influence the world. For example, you'll be able to choose new File:Newculturelist10x.pngculture traits that define how succession works, such as a matriarchal or patriarchal system.
Clans are closely tied to religion, which is strongly related to magic. Usually only clan members will be able to use magic spells from certain religions. Religions will have a special trait called File:ReligionTrait BloodlineBond.png"Bloodline Bond" that defines whether this is the case. You'll also be able to prevent specific clans from being able to use magic with the File:ClanTrait VoidBan.png"Void Ban" trait. For the most part, clans will use magic, like rites, through certain plots that assumingly use a new stat called mana. Other meta objects like File:PawSymbol10x.pngsubspecies will determine magical abilities.
Clans are not be confused with the upcoming File:HeartSymbol10x.pngfamilies. Every unit will be part of a family but only some units will be part of a clan.

Currently the revealed clan trait categories are:
- Spirit (7)
- Mind (4)
- Body (3)
- Chaos (2)
- Miscellaneous (2)
- Special - No Touching (1) [GEB (Genetically Engineered Blood)]
- GEB is going to function similarly to the File:IconDivineScar10x.pngScar of Divinity trait but for clans
