Nearly all creatures can level up, which is achieved by gaining experience (XP).

Units can get XP most commonly from killing other creatures. The easiest way to level up a unit is to trap it inside an area using mountain tiles, filling up the area with a weaker creature (like grasshoppers or beetles) and then giving the unit madness. Known sources of XP include:

  • Kill Hit +12 XP (kills that don't involve hits give 10 xp)
  • Hit +2 XP (projectiles, like arrows, count as hits)
  • Each year a king rules +20 XP
  • Each year a leader rules +10 XP

The amount of XP needed to reach the next level from level X is given by EXP = 20 × X + 80. All units have the same experience points (XP or EXP) requirement to level up for each level.

Every time a unit levels up it will gain a fixed amount of stats:

  • +20 health
  • +1 attack speed
  • +0.5 damage

All units have a default max level of 10, but this limit can be increased by the Heroes knowledge (+2) and being a member of a level 5 alliance (+1), leading to a highest possible level of 13.

"Total" takes into account all previous level bonuses/requirements. So level 3 is 40 health, 1 attack speed, and 1 damage + base stats

Extra Info[edit]

  • At level 10 units without the necessary requirements will stop gaining xp at 260/280
  • You may be confused to see that sometimes stats don't increase the expected amount when checking the updated level of a unit. This is because things like units age, traits and items can also influence a units stats. For example when intentionally leveling a unit after level 3 should give the unit the veteran trait
  • When units turn into another unit they lose their previous level and get set back to one
  • When looking at levels in the code it appears that it’s supposed to increase armor by .333r each level. This does not happen in-game, it is assumed that it is bugged in some way
