Description

Windmills

Windmills are a structure built by villages to make farms that can provide villages with constant supply of wheat which can be used to make bread. It can be built once a culture unlocks the "Windmill" knowledge, which can be unlocked as early as culture level 6. They will store a village's wheat, if a windmill is destroyed a village's entire wheat supply could be lost. Windmills have two tiers (there does not appear to be any difference in the two tiers besides visual appearance), each race has a differently textured windmill for both tiers. Only one windmill can be built per village, if a village obtains 2 or more through expanding over abandoned windmills only one will have a farm.

Farms

Farms are a circular area around a windmill composed of field tiles, where crops (i.e. wheat) are planted and harvested.

All farms must be created within a fixed circular area with a radius of 9 tiles and the windmill in the center. After deducting the area of the windmill (3×2 tiles), this leaves a maximum of 247 usable tiles per farm. Farms must also be fully contained within the village its windmill is built in, and will not expand onto other villages; therefore if a windmill is built too close to a village border, parts of the farm may be "cut off".

Farms are created and worked on by units with the Farmer job. Farmers will convert sand, plain soil, and forest soil into field tiles, plant wheat, and harvest it when it matures. Farmers will stay near windmills until they are needed instead of quickly switching jobs like with some other jobs.

Farms can be built in any biome including the infernal biome despite its tendency to catch fire (field tiles are very flammable).

Trivia

  • Before the 0.14.0 update, kingdoms and cities could have multiple farms and would be built in random shapes. Following the 0.14 update, there can only be one farm in each city, and the farmland (field) tile is built around the windmill.
  • Field tiles used to be larger before version 0.14.0
  • Windmills were added in version 0.12.02 and mostly served as decoration until version 0.14.0
